Sigma

The Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma, formally known as the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, was chartered at the Columbia University School of Nursing in 1964. Membership is by invitation to nurse leaders who exhibit exceptional achievements in nursing, and to nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship.

Membership Criteria

Sigma does not discriminate. Candidates are qualified for membership so long as eligibility requirements are met.

Nurse Leaders in the Alpha Zeta Community

A nurse leader, who is a registered nurse, legally recognized to practice in her/his country with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field and who has demonstrated achievement in nursing, shall be eligible for membership. 

Students at Columbia University School of Nursing

Eligibility is determined after the completion of the Fall semester. Invitations for membership are extended in March. Induction into the Society is in May.

Student candidates in the Basic Program (pre-licensure MDE) shall have demonstrated superior academic achievement, academic integrity and professional leadership potential.

  • Rank in class:  Students shall rank not lower than the highest 35 percent of their class in scholarship.
  • Curriculum:  Students shall have completed at least one-half of the required nursing curriculum.                                                         

Student candidates in the Graduate Programs (for advanced education in nursing: MSCML, CRNA, CNM, DNP, PhD) are eligible for membership if they have achieved excellence according to the standards approved by the Society.

  • GPA:  Above 3.5
  • Curriculum: Students shall have completed a minimum of one-quarter of the required graduate curriculum definition. Graduate program is defined as an accredited program of graduate study in nursing including master, post-master, doctoral and post-doctoral.
