We are pleased to announce that the PhD program has been successfully registered by NY State. Unanimous approval by Columbia University Academic Senate was obtained in February, and this was the final step in the review process for transitioning the DNSc program to the PhD. The first class of PhD students will enter in Fall, 2008.

Why did the School change from the Doctorate of Nursing Science program to a PhD program?

We wish to examine strategies for greater integration and synergy of these academic programs, while distinguishing the unique features of the clinical practice and research doctorate

Will the PhD program differ from the Doctorate of Nursing Science program?

We do not yet know how the programs will differ.

I am currently in the Doctor of Nursing Science program. Can I change my degree objective from the DNSc to the PhD?

This question can only be answered once the PhD plan is fully developed.

I graduated from the Doctor of Nursing Science program. Can I change my degree to the PhD?

Columbia University policy does not allow graduates to change the degree awarded for the program that was completed. The DNSc will remain a permanent and valued part of the School’s history, and graduates with the DNSc will continue to contribute to the growth of research scholarship in nursing.
