Funding highlights since the Fall 2007 newsletter include:

• Dr. Leanne Currie, Assistant Professor of Nursing, is also principal investigator of an R03 project entitled, "Automated Fall and Injury Risk Assessment for Behavioral Health (AFIP-BH)" This 2-year feasibility study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health of the NIH for $161,000, aims to develop and validate a fall and injury risk assessment model, identify appropriate safety measures to support clinical decision making and documentation, and ultimately develop and test a computer-based prototype for use by individuals caring for patients in the behavioral health setting.


• Dr. Kristine Gebbie is PI of a project entitled, "Building the Base for a Research Agenda on Local Public Health Legal Authority." The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has committed $394,000 over the course of 2 years for work to be performed by Dr. Gebbie and the Center for Health Policy, in conjunction with the Center for Law and the Public’s Health at Johns Hopkins University. The aim of the project is to expand the ability of practitioners and scholars to assess law as a tool to improve public health, building the base for a research agenda on local public health legal authority by documenting and analyzing the scope, breadth, and content of local public health ordinances in key program areas.


• Haomiao Jia, PhD, is the recipient of the first CUSON Translational Developmental Award entitled, "Use of the Population Health Day Measures as Community Health Status Indicators." This 1-year pilot research project will explore the use of the CDC’s health-related quality of life survey measures, called "Health Days" as community health status indictors using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.


• Rita Marie John, DNP, CPNP is PI of a newly funded 2-year Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy Educational Grant entitled, "Improving the Understanding and Use of Laboratory Values by Graduate Students in the Health Care Sciences." With Dr. Arlene Smaldone as a Co-Investigator, Dr. John’s project aims to improve student knowledge and confidence in the ability to order appropriate laboratory tests and interpret results in order that they can apply their knowledge to real world patient scenarios. This is the 3rd Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy Educational Grant awarded to the School of Nursing.


• The Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence awarded Columbia University School of Nursing (PI: Dr. Nancy Reame) one of the first four grants in its groundbreaking $2.5 million Jonas Nursing Scholars program, designed to address the nation’s accelerating shortage of nursing faculty. The program supports educational development of new nursing faculty and stimulates models for joint faculty appointments between schools of nursing and clinical affiliates. The partnership of CUSON and Columbia University’s Irving Institute of Translational Science will receive funding for two doctoral students and the partnership of CUSON. Each scholar will receive four years of funding for tuition and living stipends up to a maximum of $70,000 per year per scholar through forgivable loans.
