Suzanne Bakken Becomes First Nurse Selected For 2019 IMIA François Grémy Award of Excellence

Columbia Nursing’s Suzanne Bakken, PhD, Alumni Professor of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics, was recently selected as the recipient of the 2019 International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) François Grémy Award of Excellence. Bakken will receive the award on August 25th, at MedInfo 2019’s opening ceremonies in Lyon, France.

As Bakken states in IMIA’s press release: “It is an honor and a privilege to be the first nurse and 10th recipient of the François Grémy Award of Excellence. [….]. It is particularly special to be receiving this award in Professor Grémy’s home country of France and at a time when our field is increasing called upon to advance health and health equity through informatics.”

Lifelong Commitment to Informatics

According to IMIA’s press release, Bakken was recognized for her decades of contributions to the field through research, education, and development of informatics-based solutions, and for her lifetime commitment and dedication to informatics nationally and internationally.

Christopher Lehmann, MD, president of IMIA, noted: “[…] Bakken’s tremendous contributions to science and education have made her a leader in our field. Just as importantly, however, honoring […] Bakken highlights the importance of nursing informatics to the international community and the International Medical Informatics Association.”

Accomplishments & Research Agenda

Among her many accomplishments, Bakken leads a National Institutes of Health-funded research center and training program. Her agenda of research includes: promoting health; reducing health disparities in underserved populations; and visualization of health care data, among other areas.
