Tonda Hughes, PhD, is Elected as a Fellow into the New York Academy of Medicine

A prominent researcher whose career has spanned more than three decades, Tonda Hughes, PhD, Henrik H. Bendixen Professor of International Nursing, and Associate Dean for Global Health, has been elected as a Fellow into the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM).

She will be inducted on November 7, becoming the 17th Columbia Nursing faculty member to hold this distinction. NYAM fellowship recognizes health professionals who have been active in their field for at least ten years and demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession.

“It is truly an honor to become a Fellow in the New York Academy of Medicine, a body that is dedicated to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy life,” said Hughes. “I plan to be a resource for the organization, while championing Columbia Nursing and the research we produce that improves the lives of all people and drives health equity.”

Hughes’ current work at Columbia Nursing focuses on both reducing disparities in and improving the health of LGBTQ communities and in mentoring the next generation of scholars. She has guided numerous new investigators and pre- and post-doctoral scholars across disciplines, adding to a deeper understanding of how substance use and violence and victimization impact the health and well-being of sexual minority women. Hughes has received approximately $25 million in grant awards.
