Rwanda

In the summer of 2005 the Columbia University SON WHO Center
undertook a project to evaluate the current role of nurses in the
primary care of individuals in Rwanda with HIV disease. With a HIV
prevalence rate between 5.1 and 7%, 230,000 are adults currrently
living with HIV. With a nationwide shortage of physicians, Rwandan
nurses are positioned to take a leading role in the care and
treatment of HIV patients in Rwanda. Dr. Richard Garfield and
nursing doctoral student Bill LaRock spent time evaluating the
current role of nurses in Rwandan community health clinics and made
recommendations regarding role expansion in HIV care, training and
on going education of nurses.
