Patricia Stone, PhD and her research team have received official notice of the 2-year $299,990 funding from RWJF Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative (INQRI) for the research grant entitled, "The Impacts of Nurse Staffing, Skill Mix, and Experience on Quality and Costs in Long-Term Care". Specifically, CUSON will be awarded a $136,968 subcontract in this award. Additionally, the team has received $75,000 of supplemental funds from the VA HSRD. The study setting for this project are the 368 LTC units operated by the VA across 162 facilities. The VA has implemented state-of-the-art clinical information systems that enable us to develop detailed, accurate measures of nursing-sensitive patient outcomes. Using data from multiple facilities belonging to the same umbrella organization that standardizes data collection across facilities results in definitions and data coding algorithms that are similar across facilities. Specifically, we plan to assess the impact of nurse staffing, skill mix, and experience on quality and costs in long term care. The research proposal was developed as a result of a current interdisciplinary project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation examining similar issues in the acute care setting.
