#8: Sophie Maya Vilamara

Posted June 2025

🎓✨ #ColumbiaNursing2025 Family Nurse Practitioner graduate Sophie Maya Vilamara shares her future plans to work as a primary care provider and her advice to future students:

“I entered the field of nursing to increase access to high-quality health care, and Columbia equipped me to do just that.

During my final semester, I began working as a family nurse practitioner at Urban Health Plan, where I serve as a primary care provider for an underserved patient population.

I aspire to use my clinical background to advocate for reforms that shift the medical-industrial complex toward truly patient-centered care. As an National Health Service Corps Scholar, I knew I wanted to begin my career in community health and intentionally tailored my clinical experiences around this goal.

My biggest piece of advice to incoming students is to approach clinicals with purpose. They’re a powerful opportunity to explore diverse practice environments and lay the foundation for a career that aligns with your values.”

#2: Research Means Better Tomorrows

Posted May 2024

Research means transforming health care by addressing real-world challenges and advancing solutions that promote better outcomes for all.

Our researchers study the full picture: from patient-level needs to the broad impacts of social determinants of health. As we face global health inequities and rising mental health challenges, nursing science will continue to yield innovative approaches to helping patients heal and thrive.

This #NursesWeek, we honor not just the care nurses provide — but also their leadership in research, improving care today, and laying the foundation for a brighter tomorrow.
