Publications

     Rita John, DNP, EdD, CPNP, director,  Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, was an author of “Spondylolysis and Spndylolisthese: The Primary Care Clinicians’ Role,” published in Clinician Reviews.

 

PhD students Catherine Cohen and Carolyn Sun were authors of “Consent to Specimen Storage and Continuing Studies by Race and Ethnicity: A Large Data Set Analysis Using the 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES),” by The Scientific World Journal.

Presentations and Honors

Three Columbia Nursing faculty members were inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing:  Jennifer Dohrn, DNP, CNM, director, Office of Global Initiatives; Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, MPH, RN, associate professor; and Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, RN, assistant professor.   Two alumni were also inducted: Alice Bonner ’81 and Patricia Aikins Murphy ’79. Ramón Lavandero ’72 was elected to the board of the American Academy of Nursing. 

 

Suzanne Bakken, RN, PhD, FAAN, FACMI, The Alumni Professor of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Friends of the National Library of Medicine.

 

Leanne Currie ’04 received the 2014 College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) award for nursing excellence.

 

Stephen Ferrara DNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, associate dean of clinical affairs, was appointed to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Task Force to Develop Plan to End AIDS Epidemic.

 

Sarah Iribarren, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, presented “Development and Evaluation of a mHealth Intervention to Support Patients with Active Tuberculosis in Argentina,” at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing Emerging Scholars Forum in Boston and “Scale-up Considerations of an mHealth Intervention to Support Patients with Active Tuberculosis,” at the Third Annual Global Nursing Caucus Conference| Delivering on Our Promises: Tools for Nursing Advocacy in Global Health, in Boston.

 

Brenda Janotha, DNP, ANP, assistant professor, received the Healthcare Heroes Award from Long Island Business News and presented “Outcomes Effectiveness: Generalizability of Evidence to the Bedside,” at Good Samaritan Hospital/ Mather Memorial Hospital Conference.

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, MPH, ANP-BC, director, Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program, presented on two topics at the National Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Meeting in Miami, FL:  “Role of Nurses in HIV & Hepatitis C Treatment" and "HIV Pre-Exposures Prophylaxis." Kwong was selected as "Nurse Champion" for New York's Clinical Education Initiative's HIV-Hepatitis C Center of Excellence.

 

Elaine Larson, PhD, RN, associate dean for research, is serving on two national groups dealing with the Ebola crisis: The Institute of Medicine’s Workshop Planning Committee, Research Priorities to Inform Public Health and Medical Practice for Domestic Ebola Virus Disease and the American Nurses Association Advisory Panel on Ebola.

 

Marlene McHugh, DNP, DCC, FNP-BC, assistant professor, was appointed to the Hospice and Palliative Care (HPNA) Board’s Development and Leadership Committee.

 

Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, MPH, RN associate professor, was elected as a member of the American College of Medical Informatics.

 

Yolanda Nitti ’96, received the Nurse of the Year Award from The National Association of Hispanic Nurses

 

Andrew Scanlon ’10, was one of three finalists in the Australian 2014 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.

 

Jasmine Travers, PhD student, presented a poster “Does State Legislation Improve Nursing Workforce Diversity?”  at the National Conference on Health Disparities- Student Forum in Long Beach, CA and “Exploring Infection Prevention and Control Barriers Among Nursing Home CNAs,” at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Research Symposium. 

 

Briefs

Columbia Nursing alumni, faculty, staff and students helped the school receive nearly $63,000 -- a 24 percent increase in gifts for a record breaking Columbia Giving Day.

 

Three new faculty members joined Columbia Nursing: Lauren Ernst, MSN, RN, ACNP, instructor; Sigrid Gabler, PhD, AGPCNP, and Katie Stevens, MSN, RN, ACNP, instructor.

 

Kevin P. Browne '92 was appointed to senior director/deputy chief nursing officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

 

James Doran ’02, chief nurse anesthetist at University Hospital in Newark, was appointed to the New Jersey Board of Nursing by Governor Chris Christie.

 

Janet L. Ready ’81 was named president of University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro.

Registration is now open for the Alumni-Student Connection Program during the winter break for students (Jan 5-19. The program enables students to get an insider’s view into a broad range of alumni careers. SEach participating student will visit their alum host at his/her workplace during one day (or part of a day) that is mutually agreed upon during winter break. If you are unable to bring a student into your workplace, please consider meeting up with a student informally—it could be a brief meeting over coffee, lunch, or dinner.
