Mathieson Elected to University Senate

Mahlon Mathieson, MS ’25, a student in the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Midwifery Program, will serve as Columbia Nursing’s next representative on the Columbia University Senate.

The election results were announced on November 24, 2025.

Established to advance shared governance at the university, the University Senate includes 111 senators from Columbia’s 20 schools and affiliated institutions, representing administration, administrative staff, faculty, libraries, research officers, and students.

Mathieson was also recently elected to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Graduate Nursing Student Academy Leadership Council, which provides direction on what programs, services, and resources should be developed to meet the needs of nursing students in master’s and doctoral degree programs.

Mathieson is a TA, peer mentor and academic coach, roles that allow her to support fellow graduate students academically and emotionally. Her research focuses on developing a screening tool for identifying interpersonal violence during antepartum care, with the goal of integrating trauma-informed practices into midwifery settings.
