Melissa Beauchemin, PhD ’19, presented “Implementing and Evaluating Systematic Financial Screening in Outpatient Oncology Clinics” at the Cancer Control & Survivorship Institute Speaker Series at the Cancer Survivorship Institute, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, on May 6, 2025, in Chicago. 

Natalie Benda presented “Moving AI from Patient Adjacent to Patient-Centered―Patient Perspectives on Using AI to Support Mental Health” at a virtual conference on maternal health and health-care disparities held by the National Institute of Statistical Sciences on May 8, 2025. 

Tonda Hughes co-led the second National Nursing LGBTQ Summit, hosted by the University of Iowa on April 24–25, 2025. At the summit, Suzanne Bakken presented “Federal Research Update and Response Strategies: Case Example of Columbia University” and Phoenix Matthews presented “Research as Resistance: A Call to Sustain, Strengthen, and Thrive.” Billy Caceres and PhD students Sophia Kalomeris, Susan Maloney, and Tyler Gaedecke also participated. 

Maxim Topaz presented “Revolutionizing Healthcare: Integrating AI for Enhanced Patient Care and Clinical Efficiency” as a keynote speaker at the Healthcare of the Future Conference on May 9, 2025, in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. 
 
Meghan Reading Turchioe, PhD ’18, presented "Associations Between Atrial Fibrillation Symptom Clusters and Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events Following Catheter Ablation” at the Heart Rhythm Society Annual Conference, held April 24–27, 2025, in San Diego. The paper was included in a session on the best digital health articles of the year from the society’s journal, Heart Rhythm O2

Awards 

Maureen George received the Marilyn Hansen Award from the Assembly on Nursing of the American Thoracic Society for the highest-rated abstract by a nurse scientist, on May 18, 2025.  

Other News 

Amanda Hessels earned the Certified Nurse Educator credential from the National League for Nursing, a significant mark of distinction for academic nurse educators.  

Allison Norful, PhD ’17, was a guest on Accenture’s “Mavericks in Healthcare: Chronicles of Innovation” podcast" on May 14, 2025. Titled “Nurses on the Frontlines of Change: Advocacy, Authority, and the Future of Care,” the episode discussed how nurse leaders are transforming care delivery, myths about full practice authority for APRNs, and the importance of addressing stigma related to nurses seeking mental health care.  

Nancy Reame was an innovation reviewer for the 2025 Healthy Longevity Catalyst Award competition, sponsored by the National Academy of Medicine, on May 5, 2025. The NAM Catalyst Award supports potentially transformative and early-stage projects to improve the physical, mental, or social well-being and health of people as they age in a measurable and equitable way. She also served as an external reviewer for grant applications for the Auckland Medical Research Foundation in Auckland, New Zealand, on May 15, 2025.
