Jean-Marie Bruzzese, PhD, associate professor; Rita Marie John ’05, DNP, special lecturer; and Jade Sekeres ’17, MS, student, were the authors of “An Adolescent Male With a Nonhealing Leg Ulcer: A Case of Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis,” published in The Nurse Practitioner.

Allison Norful ’17, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow; Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, associate professor; and Siqin Ye, MD, assistant professor of medicine, CUIMC, were among the authors of “The Perspectives of Nurse Practitioners and Physicians on Increasing the Number of Registered Nurses in Primary Care,” published in Nursing Economic$.

Awards and Honors

Sarah Collins ’09, PhD, assistant professor of biomedical informatics and nursing, received a Leadership Award from the American Medical Informatics Association.

Maureen George, PhD, associate professor, received the Sheldon L. Spector, MD FAAAAI Memorial Lectureship from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Foundation.

Elaine L. Larson, PhD, senior associate dean of scholarship and research, and Anna C. Maxwell Professor of Nursing Research, received the Walsh McDermott Medal from the National Academy of Medicine. The medal is awarded to a member for distinguished service to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine over an extended period. Larson is one of only two nurses to receive the honor.  

Allison Norful ’17, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, was recognized by the Nurse Practitioner Association New York State for having one of the “Top Poster Presentations.”

Adriana Arcia, PhD, assistant professor, and Maureen George, PhD, associate professor, presented “Reference Range Number Line Format Preferred by African American Adults for Display of Asthma Control Status” at the 2018 Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare, in San Francisco, California.

Adriana Arcia, PhD, assistant professor, presented “Features Desired by Medicaid-Enrolled Pregnant Women for a Digital Maternity Information Resource” at the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Annual Symposium, in San Francisco, California.

Kellie Bryant, DNP, assistant professor, and executive director of simulation, presented “Using Simulation to Teach Safe Medication Administration” at the Wolters Kluwer Southeast Regional Nursing Education and Innovation Summit, in Miami, Florida.

Amanda Hessels, PhD, assistant professor, presented “Keys to Success in Writing Great Grant Proposals” at the New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nurses, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Marlene McHugh ’89 ’91 ’08, DNP, assistant professor, and Rakiyah Jones ’17, MS, student, presented “Advance Care Planning in Minoritized Communities: Do U_TRUST Yourself to Have the Conversation?” at the 12th Annual Hospital and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) Clinical Practice Forum, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, associate professor, presented “Primary Care Delivery by Nurse Practitioners: Policy, Work Environment, and Practice” at an Accelerated MPH Seminar at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, in New York, New York. Poghosyan also presented “Building a Program of Research: Nurse Practitioners’ Practice, Measurement, and Impact” at Rutgers University, School of Nursing’s Distinguished Lecturer Series, in Newark, New Jersey. Poghosyan presented “Primary Care Delivery and Teams: NP Practice, Measurement, and Impact” at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at one of the center’s seminars, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Rebekah Ruppe ’00 ’01 ’09, DNP, assistant professor, and Tirissa Reid, MD, assistant professor of medicine, CUIMC, presented “Using Narrative Medicine and Obesity Education to Reduce Weight Self-Stigma in Patients With Obesity” at the 35th American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Annual Meeting at ObesityWeek 2018, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Carolyn Sun ’15, PhD, associate research scientist, presented “Can Color-Coded and Treaded Socks Help Prevent Patient Falls?” at the 2018 Vizient Fall Connections Summit, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kyungmi Woo ’18, PhD, postdoctoral research scientist, and Jingjing Shang, PhD, associate professor, presented “Factors Associated with the Decision-Making of Home Care Patients With Heart Failure Regarding Initiation of Telehealth Services” at the International Conference on Home Healthcare, Hospice, and Information Technology, in Grapevine, Texas.

Briefs and Other News

Barbara Hackley ’81, PhD received a 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Lisa Iannacci-Manasia ’77 ’89, MS, instructor, served on the planning committee for “The Path Forward in Cystic Fibrosis: Advanced Education for Nurses Caring for Patients with Advanced Lung Disease & Transplantation,” a program held at Loyola University Medical Center, in Maywood, Illinois. Iannacci-Manasia is the program director for the Boomer Esiason Foundation/Johnson & Johnson TRU Heroes Cystic Fibrosis Nursing Program, which sponsored the gathering.

Anne Miller ’86 received a 2018 Outstanding Preceptor Award by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Barbara Reale ’85, MS received a 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Carolyn Sun ’15, PhD, associate research scientist, was interviewed by Fast Company.

Ithamar Turenne ’18 received the President’s Award for Excellence in Leadership from the LCU Fund for Women’s Education.

Cindy Veldhuis, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, is now a consulting editor for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation & Gender Diversity.
