Grants

Jean-Marie Bruzzese, PhD, associate professor, is the principal investigator of a 5-year, R01 research grant entitled, “Translating an Evidence-based Urban Asthma Program for Rural Adolescents: Testing Effectiveness & Cost-effectiveness and Understanding Factors Associated with Implementation.” The goal of this $3.64 million grant, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health is to systematically evaluate Asthma Self-Management for Adolescents (ASMA).

 

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, associate professor, is the principal investigator of a 1-year supplement grant to his current Nurse Education, Practice, Quality, and Retention—Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Program entitled, “Collaborative Access for LGBT Adults (CALA).” The goal of this $544,000 supplement funded by Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) is to improve access to evidence-based and culturally appropriate mental health and substance use services for LGBT adult, with an emphasis on the aging population, in a nurse-led primary care practice.

 

Michael Greco, DNP, CRNA, director, Graduate Program in Nurse Anesthesia, is the principal investigator of the Nurse Anesthetists Traineeship Program for 2017-2018 funded by the Health resource and Services Administration. This program will provide $31,000 in scholarships to offset tuition costs and help increase the number of advanced practicing nurse anesthetists in Columbia Nursing’s 37 clinical sites while meeting the clinical affiliates’ needs as well as the growing demand for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

 

Ruth Masterson Creber, PhD, associate research scientist, is the principal investigator of a new pilot project entitled, “Survival Analysis of Urban Home Care Patients with Heart Failure Entering Hospice.” The goal of this 1-year, $7,000 pilot grant funded by the Eugenie and Joseph Doyle Research Partnership of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) is to identify prognostic cut-points of the Palliative Performance Scale, a tool for predicting survival and predictors of discharge from home hospice amount patients.

 

Allison Norful, PhD, postdoctoral fellow, was awarded an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (TRANSFORM TL1) for her project, “The Development and Application of the Precision Co-Management Index (PRE-CMI): Measuring Shared Decision Making in Chronic Disease Management.” The first year of this award, funded for $57,000 and eligible for a second year renewal, supports her work through a joint appointment as a postdoctoral trainee at Columbia University Medical Center’s Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.

 

Meghan Reading, RN, MPH, Columbia Nursing PhD student, is principal investigator of a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) entitled, “Factors Associated with Sustained Engagement with ECG mHealth Technology in a Post-Intervention Atrial Fibrillation Population.” The over-arching goal of this 1-year NRSA F31 Individual Fellowship, funded for $44,000 by the National Institute of Nursing Research of the National Institutes of Health, is to understand factors associated with sustained engagement with ECG mHealth technology using a personalized approach.

Patricia Stone, PhD, Centennial Professor of Health Policy, authored “Determining Value in the US Healthcare System” published in Nursing Economics.

 

Amanda Hessels, PhD, associate research scientist, was the second author of “Journal Club: Developing a User-Friendly Report for Electronically Assisted Surveillance of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract,” published in American Journal of Infection Control. 

 

Krista Schroeder, PhD, postdoctoral fellow, Jia Haomiao, PhD, associate professor, Y. Claire Wang, ScD, associate professor at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, were authors of “Implementation of a School Nurse-led Intervention for Children with Severe Obesity in New York City Schools,” published in Journal of Pediatric Nursing.

 

Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research and Jia Haomiao, PhD, associate professor, and Nancy Green, MD, Columbia University Medical Center, were among the authors of “Randomized Feasibility Trial to Improve Hydroxyurea Adherence in Youth Ages 10-18 Years Through Community Health Workers: The HABIT Study,” published in Pediatric, Blood & Cancer. 

 

Kristine Kulage, MPH, director, Office of Scholarship and Research Development and Elaine Larson, PhD, associate dean for research, authored “Intramural Pilot Funding and Internal Grant Reviews Increase Research Capacity at a School of Nursing,” published in Nursing Outlook.

 

Maichou Lor, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, was an author of “How Could Nurse Researchers Apply Theory to Generate Knowledge More Efficiently?” published in Journal of Nursing Scholarship.

 

Maichou Lor, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, authored “Systematic Review: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Among Hmong Adults in the USA” published in Journal of Racial Ethnic Health Disparities. 

 

Maichou Lor, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, was an author of “Feasibility of Audio-Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing with Color-Coding and Helper Assistance (AASI-H) for Hmong Older Adults” published in Research in Nursing & Health.   

Presentation and Honors

Nancy Reame, PhD, Mary Dickey Lindsay Professor Emerita of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, received The Ann Voda Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research.

 

Tonda Hughes’, PhD, director, Global Health Research, appointment to the Henrik H. Bendixen Professorship of International Nursing was approved by the University Trustees.

 

Cindy Veldhuis, PhD, postdoctoral research scientist, was awarded the Junior Investigator Award by the Research Society on Alcoholism.

 

Cindy Veldhuis, PhD, postdoctoral research scientist, was awarded the Early Career Psychologist Travel Award, Division 35, Section IV, by the American Psychological Association.

 

Rozelle Corda, FNP, assistant professor, presented “Postoperative Secondary Chylothoraces are Associated with Lymphatic Endothelial Cell Defects and Misexpression of Beta-Adrenerg” at the World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in Barcelona, Spain.

 

Rita Marie John, DNP, associate professor, presented “New Guidelines in Infectious Disease & Vaccine Updates and Emerging Infectious Diseases 2017” at the NAPNAP Specialty Symposium: Pediatric Infectious Diseases in Tampa, Florida.

Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, and Cindy Veldhuis, PhD, postdoctoral research scientist, presented “I Worry for the Safety of Queers That Don’t Pass as Hetero:” The Effects of the 2016 Presidential Election on LGBTQ Individuals” at the 2017 National LGBTQ Health Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
