Associate Professor Stephen Ferrara Elected AANP President

Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Stephen Ferrara, DNP, has been elected president for 2023-2025 of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the largest professional membership organization for NPs.

His term as president-elect begins June 25, 2023, at the close of the 2023 AANP’s national conference.

As executive director for Nurse Practitioner Association New York State (The NPA) for a decade, Ferrara advocated successfully for the NP Modernization Act, which allows experienced NPs to practice without regulated physician collaboration. For many years, he has participated in The NPA’s annual Capitol Day, in which NPs and NP students visit Albany to meet with state legislators.  Ferrara is an associate professor at Columbia Nursing and executive director of Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare. He also oversees the Nurse Practitioner Group, Columbia Nursing’s faculty practice.

“I look forward to serving as a representative of our nation’s 355,000 nurse practitioners and the millions of patients they care for,” Ferrara said. “As faculty and a member of the executive leadership team at Columbia Nursing, I will collaborate with stakeholders at the national level to find solutions to solve the health issues that plague our health care system—namely, access to equitable, culturally competent, and just health care.”
