Founder of the Greenbelt Movement, a grassroots organization that has galvanized women to plant over 40 million trees in schools, communities and church compounds in order to conserve the environment and improve their quality of life.
Champion for democracy and human rights against the oppressive regime of Daniel arap Moi, former president of Kenya.
Dr. Maathai holds a doctorate in veterinary anatomy, the first African woman in East and Central Africa to earn such a degree.
Dr. Maathai was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2004, for her “contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace." She was the first African woman to receive this honor.
