Danish Consul General to Honor Health Care Pioneer at Columbia University School of Nursing Ceremony

WHAT:

Consul General of Denmark, Ambassador Jarl Frijs-Madsen will honor a founder of Denmark’s modern health care system and Columbia University School of Nursing graduate, Charlotte Munck (Class of 1909), in a special ceremony at Columbia University Medical Center.

Widely regarded as the Florence Nightingale of Denmark, Munck established the country’s first systematic nurse training program at Bispebjerg Hospital in 1913, which laid the groundwork for legislation in 1956 that secured state regulation for nurse education. Also present at the ceremony will be Susan Rydahl-Hansen, head of nursing research at Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg University Hospital, who will accept the Distinguished Alumni Award for Lifetime Achievement on Munck’s behalf.

Dean Bobbie Berkowitz, PhD, RN, FAAN, will make introductory remarks.
