Dr. Janice Smolowitz Designated as New RWJF Executive Nurse

As Nursing and Health Care are Being Transformed, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellows Program Provides Leadership, Professional Development. Janice Smolowitz, EdD, DNP, ANP-BC, DCC, senior associate dean and professor of clinical nursing, has been named one of only 20 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Executive Nurse Fellows for 2012.

Smolowitz joins a select group of nurse leaders to participate in this three-year program to enhance the effectiveness of nurse leaders in improving the nation’s health care system. Smolowitz serves as director of CUSON's Center for Clinical Practice, and is the co-director of its Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. In addition, she oversees CUSON's universal faculty practice plan, which enables faculty members to integrate clinical practice into their academic roles. Her current work focuses on the utilization of comprehensive care to meet the growing demand for treatment by persons with chronic illness and the provision of cross site comprehensive care.

“This fellowship will provide an opportunity for exposure to a wide range of perspectives about initiatives needed to improve the delivery of healthcare services,” said Smolowitz. “The health care system is undergoing a major transition in response to economic factors, changing demography and advances in technology. People are living longer with chronic conditions and require treatment in many different settings. Evidence-based clinical practice should be utilized to help shape health care decisions and policy in the future. The Executive Nurse Fellows program will help me play a role in that effort.”

Executive Nurse Fellows hold senior leadership positions in health services, scientific and academic organizations, public health and community-based organizations or systems, and national professional, governmental and policy organizations. They continue in their current positions during their fellowships, and during the fellowship each develops, plans and implements a new initiative to improve health care delivery in her or his community.
