Grants 

Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, received a $300,000 grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Qaulity (AHRQ) for an 18-month project “Development of Dashboards to Provide Feedback to Home Care Nurses.”

 

Publications

Brenda Janotha, DNP, assistant professor, was the author of the book chapter “A Case Study in Nursing,” published in The Flipped College Classroom: Conceptualized and Re-Conceptualized.

 

Amanda Hessels, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, authored the following publications: “Systematic Review of Patient Safety Climate and Standard Precaution Adherence, published in Journal of Hospital Infection; “Impact of Health Information Technology on the Delivery and Quality of Patient Care,” published in Online Journal of Nursing Informatics; “The Impact of the Nursing Practice Environment on Missed Care,” published in Clinical Nursing Studies,” and “Building Interdisciplinary Research Models through Interactive Education,” published in Clinical and Translational Science.

 

Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, was an author of “Does State Legislation Improve Nursing Workforce Diversity?,” published in Policy, Politics, & Nursing Practice.

 

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, assistant professor, authored “Do High-Risk Young Adults Use the HIV Self-Test Appropriately? Observations from a Think-Aloud Study,”published in AIDS and Behavior; and and “Comparison of a User-Centered Design, Self-Management App to Existing mHealth Apps for Persons Living With HIV,” published in JMIR Mhealth and Uhealth.

 

Presentations and Honors

Adriana Arcia, PhD, assistant professor, presented “Feasibility and Acceptability of an Online Maternity Education Platform,” at the American Medical Informatics Association 2015 meeting. 

 

Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, presented “Recognition, Assessment and Management of the Pain of Hospital Patients with Dementia: Uncovering the Complexities Conference,” at the National Institute for Nursing Research 30th Anniversary Symposium: Advancing Science, Improving Lives.

 

Haomiao Jia, PhD, associate professor of biostatistics, presented “Impact of Smoking, Inactivity, Heavy Drinking, and Obesity on QALE Among Adult with Depression, QALY Loss Throughout Remainder of Lifetime due to Nine Chronic Conditions for Adults aged 65+” at the International Society for Quality of Life Research conference.

 

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, Program Director Adult-Gerontology Primary Care & HIV Sub Specialty, presented “Hot Off the Press! Updates in HIV Primary Care Conference,” at  the national meeting of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care; “HIV for the Primary Care Providers,” at the New York State Nurse Practitioner Association Meeting; “Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis: Clinical Considerations;” at the New York State Nurse Practitioner Association meeting; and “HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis,” at CEI National Clinical Education Webinar.

 

Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, associate professor, was appointed to the Health Policy Advisory Council of the American Association of the Colleges of Nursing.

 

Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, presented a poster: “Parent/Youth Use of Technology for Health Communication,” at the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science, 2015 Special Topics Conference; and “Building Capacity for Evidence-Based Quality Improvement: A Unique Multidimensional Multi-Disciplinary Training Program,” at Academy Health Concordium 2015.

 

Briefs

Columbia Nursing alumni, faculty, staff and students helped the school receive more than $117,000 an 85 percent increase in gifts for a record breaking Columbia Giving Day.

 

Mary Dickey Lindsay ’45 received the Witten Award for Transformational Leadership at the Columbia Alumni Leaders Weekend.

 

Laura Ardizzone ’04 ’10 served as a panelist for the first Graduate and Professional Schools Forum at the Columbia Alumni Leaders Weekend.

 

Columbia Nursing alumni and faculty attended a reception at the American Academy of Nursing’s conference in Washington, DC, coinciding with the installation of Dean Berkowitz as president.
