Meet Our BHWET Scholars

Columbia Nursing is hosting its first cohort of Behavioral Healthcare Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) scholars, who are helping alleviate the shortage of mental health care in underserved areas while learning evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches to providing behavioral health care to young people.

In 2021, the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) awarded Columbia Nursing $1.9 million through the BHWET Program for Professionals, which focuses on expanding mental health care for children, adolescents, and transitional-aged youth who are at risk of behavioral health problems.

Columbia-BHWET’s inaugural class of 16 PMHNP and OT students began the one-year, interdisciplinary program in September 2021. Scholars complete three semesters of seminars, workshops, fieldwork, and clinical experiences, and receive stipends through HRSA and the United States Department of Health.
