Grants

Kenrick Cato, PhD, assistant professor, is the principal investigator of a $2.6 million, 5-year R01 grant entitled, “Communicating Narrative Concerns Entered by RNs (CONCERN).” The grant, funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research of the National Institute of Health, is to design and evaluate a SMARTapp to expose physicians and nurses to a predictive data source from nursing documentation in electronic health records. 

 

Suzanne Bakken, alumni professor of nursing and professor of biomedical informatics, is the principal investigator and program director of a 5-year competitive renewal of the Columbia University School of Nursing T32 Institutional Pre- and Post-doctoral training grant, “Reducing Health Disparities Through Informatics,” funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research of the National Institute of Health for $1.9 million, which will support the program through its 20th consecutive year.

 

Publications

Eileen Carter, PhD, assistant professor; Amanda Hessels, PhD, associate research scientist; Ana Kelly, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow; and Elaine Larson, PhD, associate dean for research; were authors of “Reported Hours of Infection Education Received Positively Associated with Student Nurses’ Ability to Comply with Infection Prevention Practices: Results from a Nationwide Survey,” published in Nurse Education Today.

 

Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, professor in biomedical informatics, Penelope Buschman, MS, FAAN, assistant professor of clinical nursing, and Jasmine Travers, PhD,  ’16, were co-authors of “An Efficient Nurse Practitioner-Led Community-Based Service Model for Delivering Coordinated Care to Persons With Serious Mental Illness at Risk for Homelessness,” published in Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. 

 

Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, was the senior author of “Victimization in Adulthood Mediates the Relationship Between Childhood Victimization and Smoking in Hetero Sexual and Sexual Minorities,” published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

 

Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, was the co-author of “Effects of Sexual Assault on Alcohol Use and Consequences Among Young Adult Sexual Minority Women,” published in Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, was the senior author of “Influence of Perceived Femininity, Masculinity, Race/Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status on Intimate Partner Violence Among Sexual Minority Women,” published in Journal of Interpersonal Violence.

Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, was the senior author of “Building Nurses’ Capacity to Address Health Inequalities: Incorporating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Content” in Journal of Clinical Nursing.

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP, associate professor, was the first author of “Evaluating the Utility of mHealth ECG Monitoring for the Detection and Management of Atrial Fibrillation in Clinical Practice,” published in Journal of Atrial Fibrillation.

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP, associate professor, was the co-author of “Genome Sequencing Technologies and Nursing: What are the Roles of Nurses and Nurse Scientists?,” published in Nursing Research.

 

Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, assistant professor, was lead author of “Organizational Attributes of NP Practices: Implications for NP Modernization Act in New York State,” published in Nursing Research.

 

Nancy Reame, PhD, Mary Dickey Lindsay professor of disease prevention and health promotion, was the co-author of “The Mito-mom Conundrum,” published in The Scientist. 

 

Presentation and Honors

Laura Zeidenstein, CNM, DNP, director of nurse midwifery program, has been chosen to receive a 2017 Excellence in Teaching Award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

 

Rita Marie John, DNP, director of pediatric primary care nurse practitioner program, has been selected as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP, associate professor, presented “The Role of Mentoring and Building Transdisciplinary Teams in Sustaining Careers of Nurse Scientists” at the 2017 National Nursing Roundtable Presentation.

 

Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, presented “From the Midwestern US to OX: Sexual Minority Women’s Health Research Findings,” at the University of Technology-Sydney Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Health in Sydney, Australia.
