Grants

Patricia Stone, PhD, centennial professor of health policy, is the principal investigator of “Study of Infection Management and Palliative Care at End-of-Life (SIMP-EL),” a 4-year project funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) of the National Institutes of Health for $2.8 million. Elaine Larson, PhD, associate dean of scholarship and research is a co-investigator of the project which aims to understand how best to improve infection management and palliative care in nursing homes to enhance residents’ quality of life.

Publications

Sainfer Aliyu, PhD student, Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, and Elaine Larson, PhD, associate dean of scholarship and research, were authors of “Prevalence of Multidrug-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria Among Nursing Home Residents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” published in American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC).

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, Mary Dickey Lindsay assistant professor of disease prevention and health promotion, was an author of “Self-Management Strategies for Coping with Adverse Symptoms in Persons Living with HIV with HIV Associated Non-AIDS Conditions,” published in AIDS Behavior.

Elizabeth Heitkemper, PhD student, and Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, were authors of “Do Health Information Technology Self-Management Interventions Improve Glycemic Control in Medically Underserved Adults With Diabetes,” published in Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, Mary Dickey Lindsay assistant professor of disease prevention and health promotion, was co-author of “Technology-Mediated Interventions and Quality of Life for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS: A Systematic Review” published in Applied Clinical Informatics.

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, Mary Dickey Lindsay assistant professor of disease prevention and health promotion, was first author of “Predictors of Willingness to Use A Smartphone For Research in Underserved Persons Living with HIV,” published in International Journal of Medical Informatics.

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, Mary Dickey Lindsay assistant professor of disease prevention and health promotion, was an author of “A Health-Related Quality-of-Life Measure for Use in Patients with HIV: A Validation Study,” published in AIDS Patient Care and STDs.

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, associate professor, co-authored “Evaluating the Utility of mHealth ECG Heart Monitoring for the Detection and Management of Atrial Fib in Clinical Practice,” published in Journal of Atrial Fibrillation.

Rita Marie John, DNP, director of pediatric primary care nurse practitioner program, was senior author of “Food-Dependent Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis,” published in Journal for Nurse Practitioners.

Brenda Janotha, DNP, assistant professor, was first author of “Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Focus on Inter-professional Collaboration,” in Nurse Practitioner Journal’s DNP Special Issue on Cancer.

Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, was first author of “The Impact of Home Care Nurses’ Numeracy and Graph Literacy on Comprehension of Visual Display Information,” published in Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Kellie Bryant, DNP, executive director of simulation, authored a book chapter in “301 Careers in Nursing.”

Presentation and Honors

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, director, adult-gerontology primary care, presented “Creating a Welcoming Clinical Space for Gender and Sexual Minorities,” at the 27th Annual John Hopkins HIV Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

Patricia Stone, PhD, centennial professor of health policy, received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, associate professor, was inducted into the 2017 Teachers College Columbia University Hall of Fame.

Marlene E. McHugh, DNP, assistant professor, presented “Using Team Based Learning for Interprofessional Education,” at the Aligning Curriculum to Achieve Health Equity at the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research in Savannah, Georgia.

Jean-Marie Bruzzese, PhD, associate professor, presented “The Development, Usability, & Acceptability of an Online Self-Management for Adolescents with Uncontrolled Asthma Conference” and “The Association of Exercise-Induced Wheeze and Other Asthma Symptoms to Emergency Department Visits and Hospitalizations,” at The Annual International Conference of the American Thoracic Society in Washington, D.C.

Rita Marie John, DNP, director of pediatric primary care nurse practitioner program, presented “Mental Health Review Course for the PMHS Exam” at the National NAPNAP Conference (National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners) in Denver.

Brenda Janotha, DNP, assistant professor, presented “Interactive Learning for Effective Inter-Professional Collaboration,” at the National Organization for Nurse Practitioner Faculties in Washington D.C.

Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, presented “Using Feedback Intervention Theory to Design Clinical Dashboards,” “Using the MRC Framework for Complex Interventions to Develop Clinical Decision Support,” and “Leveraging Visual Data at the Point of Care” as part of a panel presentation at the Medical Informatics Europe Conference in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Briefs

Raga Bjarnadottir ’16 received the 2017 AcademyHealth Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues New Investigator Award. 

Joanne Nieratko Cunha ’04 ’06 holds a new position as the first midwife of Saint Peter’s University Hospital.   

The late Abigail Flanagan ’15 was honored by the Rockland County Legislature for her positive contributions through her nursing and volunteer service.     

Leslie Groves ’86 is now the Chief Nursing Officer at Bridgewater State Hospital.

Nancy Pontes ’03 was inducted as a Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, an interprofessional, national organization that advises governmental bodies on health care delivery in the United States.
