Ruth Masterson Creber, PhD, MSc, RN, FAAN, FAHA, FHFSA
- Mary Crawford Professor of Nursing

Overview
Ruth Masterson Creber, PhD, MSc, BSN, FAAN, FAHA, is the Mary Crawford Professor of Nursing at Columbia University School of Nursing. Her scholarship leverages digital health, implementation science, and community-engaged methods to address cardiovascular disease and related chronic conditions in diverse—often underserved—populations. Grounded in nursing science and informed by health informatics, her program of research spans the full translational continuum: (i) identifying patient- and system-level determinants of outcomes; (ii) designing and testing technology-enabled interventions; (iii) conducting pragmatic clinical trials embedded in health-care systems; and (iv) disseminating scalable, equity-focused models in global and humanitarian contexts.
Three cross-cutting principles unite this portfolio: (1) rigorous use of digital technologies to extend evidence-based care outside traditional settings; (2) systematic application of implementation-science frameworks to accelerate translation and ensure sustainability; and (3) authentic engagement of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and communities to co-create interventions that narrow health-equity gaps.
Among her signature projects, Dr. Masterson Creber leads the PCORI-funded MIGHTy-Heart trial, a pragmatic evaluation of a mobile-integrated health service that deploys community paramedics and tele-emergency physicians to improve hospital-to-home transitions for patients with heart failure. She also directs multinational, pragmatic cardiac-surgery trials in more than 70 hospitals across Europe, Asia, North and South America to determine how coronary artery bypass graft surgery affects long-term symptoms, quality of life, and cognition.
Her contributions to cardiovascular science and digital health have been recognized by election as a Fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the American Heart Association, and by induction into the Sigma Theta Tau International Research Hall of Fame and being awarded the Protege Award from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research.
Dr. Ruth Masterson Creber earned dual BA and BSN degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University School of Nursing. Before returning to Columbia, she served at Weill Cornell Medicine (2018–2022) as Assistant and then Associate Professor of Population Health Sciences (Division of Health Informatics) and of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Across these appointments, Dr. Masterson Creber has advanced a globally relevant, equity-focused research agenda that integrates pragmatic clinical trials, digital-health innovation, and community engagement to improve cardiovascular care and health-system practice worldwide. A dedicated mentor, she has guided undergraduates, master’s students, doctoral candidates, and post-doctoral fellows—many of whom have subsequently obtained federal funding, research awards, and tenure-track faculty positions.
