Dissemination of the WiseApp for Improving Health Outcomes Across Settings (WiseApp in Spanish)

Principal Investigator

About the Study

The purpose of this research study is to assess the effectiveness of using a mobile health (mHealth) approach to improving the quality of life for Spanish-speaking people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States (New York City) and the Dominican Republic (La Romana).

This in-person study will recruit 248 participants and will take place in the New York-Presbyterian (NYP) Hospital in Washington Heights for the NYC site and at the Clínica de Familia La Romana in La Romana for the DR site. The procedures in this study are to complete surveys and blood draws every three months after enrollment (no study procedures for the 9-month mark). Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Some participants will receive a pill bottle dispenser and access to a mobile application (app), while other participants will receive a standard of care.

The time frame for your involvement in the study is one year. Study participants will receive up to USD$220 after finishing the 12-month study.

For Participants

  • The "WiseApp in Spanish study" is a 12-month study looking at how a phone app and a pill dispenser can help Spanish-speaking people living with HIV monitor and improve their overall quality of life. The study involves 4 site visits to a clinic in Washington Heights (NYC) or Clínica de Familia La Romana (DR), which will include taking a blood sample and completing a survey on an iPad (for all 4 visits). At the end of the first visit, some participants will be asked to use a daily pill dispenser for their HIV medication and to use a health app on their phone during their participation in the study.
