On a steamy day in August, a group of 20 Columbia Nursing students watched the American flag rise over the U.S. embassy in Havana for the first time since 1961. Standing in the Plaza de la Revolucion, a few hundred yards from the embassy, they recorded videos on their smart phones, posted selfies on Instagram, and chatted with Cuban citizens, some wearing T-shirts with the American president’s face.

A milestone conference brought together nurse and midwifery leaders from 13 sub-Saharan African nations with the goal of creating an action plan that identifies knowledge gaps in clinical care.

To help nurses, researchers and other health care providers trying to improve communication about health with and within Spanish-speaking populations, Columbia Nursing PhD student Samantha Stonbraker identified and summarized 19 validated methods that can be used to measure health literacy among Latinos in clinical and research settings. Her research, “Tools to Measure Health Literacy Among Spanish Speakers: An Integrative Review of the Literature,” was recently published in the journal Patient Education and Counseling.
